The Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap County are offering before- and after-school programs for elementary students in the South Kitsap School District.
For students age 6 and up, the Boys and Girls Club is offering an “after school program” for elementary at its South Kitsap club branches. Hours are after school to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at Orchard Heights Elementary School, 2288 Fircrest Dr., and Sidney Glen Elementary School, 500 SW Birch Rd.
Annual registration is $15 per child and it applies to time of enrollment with a maximum payment of $50 per family. No child will be turned away due to inability to pay. Payment plans can be established.
Prices are $90 per month, $60 per month for those who qualify for reduced lunches and $30 per month for those who qualify for free lunches. Daily drop-in fees are $15 per child for youth not registered on a monthly program.
There will be enrichment activities, meals and snacks, and transportation provided from most South Kitsap School District schools.
Jinnie Hanson, marketing and communications director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, said the South Kitsap Branch was opened in 2007 with the support of the school district and community.
“Last year, we served more than 130 elementary kids each day between those two sites, with approximately 500 elementary-aged children served each year,” said Hanson.
She said their programs are aligned to the curriculum the district teaches.
“Academic success, character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles as our three main program impact areas,” Hanson said. “Our staff work with the teachers to help identify any areas our kids may be struggling with to provide additional support at the club. Our program staff just completed a Youth Program Quality Initiative training, to ensure we are providing the highest quality program to our kids.”
Hanson said during the summer, the club was able to leverage the summer lunch program offered at East Port Orchard Elementary while holding the summer program there.
“During the summer, we offer an all day summer day camp,” she added.
Hanson said the club keeps their fees low, but they also provide scholarships to attend their programs so that they don’t turn any children away due to inability to pay.
The school district will provide transportation from Manchester, South Colby, Olalla and Mullenix Ridge to Orchard Heights, and from East Port Orchard, Sunnyslope, Hidden Creek and Burley-Glenwood to Sidney Glen. For more information, call 253-502-4600 or go online to www.bgcsps.org.
Before- and after-school child care
The YMCA will offer before- and after-school child care at two South Kitsap schools. Parents will have the option of child care at Burley-Glenwood or Sunnyslope Elementary schools.
The YMCA is partnering with the South Kitsap School District to develop a licensed school-age program serving children ages 5-12 that will be housed at the two schools.
Children that are enrolled in the child care program will have the added benefit of a YMCA membership that allows them to participate in a variety of classes and activities at YMCA facilities.
Before school care is open at 6 a.m. and is $205 per month for full-time care (3-5 times each week) with YMCA membership; part-time care (1-2 days per week) is $148 with YMCA membership.
