Board votes to move forward with Silverdale library campaign

The Kitsap Regional Library Board of Trustees voted to move forward with a capital campaign for a new library in Silverdale.

The Kitsap Regional Library Board of Trustees voted to move forward with a capital campaign for a new library in Silverdale.

The board also voted to proceed with a down payment on the chosen parcel of land, located on the corner of Bucklin Hill Road and Blaine Avenue. The site is adjacent to the Clear Creek trail, across the road from Dyes Inlet.

“There is no other piece of land available in Silverdale that not only provides a central location for a new library, but is also a place that invites the community to go outside and explore the wonderful natural area we live in,” said Library Director Jill Jean.

The first milestone of the campaign will be to raise $850,000 by the Nov. 25 deadline to purchase the land.

“Raising the money to secure the site this year is critical,” said Jaime Forsyth, executive director of the Kitsap Regional Library Foundation.

“It will give this community the security of knowing that all their dreams of a new library now have a permanent home,” Forsyth said.

It is estimated that between $7 million and $7.5 million must be raised to pay for the 10,000-square-foot library. A number of factors could impact the cost, including the length of time it takes to raise the funds and any revisions to the draft conceptual design.

“We know that this community has been waiting for a new library for a generation,” said Jean.

“This will set a new standard in Kitsap County for what a library can be.”
