Olympic High School PTSA will host a book fair fundraiser this Saturday at the Kitsap Mall Barnes and Noble. Customers will have the opportunity for their purchases to benefit Olympic from open to close Feb. 23.

Everything in the store is eligible to benefit the fundraiser, with the possible exception of gift cards, said Ruthanne Devlin, Barnes and Noble Silverdale’s community relations manager.

In order for the purchases to count toward the fundraiser, customers need to give their cashier a voucher with an ID number or say they are shopping for Olympic High School. Vouchers can be obtained from PTSA volunteers who will be located at both Barnes and Noble entrances.

Devlin said customers don’t actually have to be present at the Silverdale location to help the school’s effort. People can shop online at barnesandnoble.com or at any Barnes and Noble location and, as long as they give the ID number, their purchases will benefit the fundraiser.

If a person has an aunt in Atlanta Ga., Devlin said, and that aunt wants to help the book fair she can go into an Atlanta Barnes and Noble. As long as she gives them the right ID number her purchase will help Olympic.

“That also contributes to what Olympic is rebated — anything online or at any of the other 700 Barnes and Nobles in the United States,” Devlin said.

Funds raised from the event will go to the Olympic High School library. The PTSA also had teachers create wish lists for the book fair. Julie Newman, Olympic PTSA executive secretary, said teachers responded by asking for new reference books to replace some of the outdated ones the teachers are currently using.

“The school is only allotted so much money each year for educational resources,” Newman said. “What we’re trying to do is provide those funds for them.”

The group will receive between 10 and 20 percent of the day’s profits, Devlin said. The more sales Olympic generates, the greater the percentage they will receive.

“We have to earn $2,000,” Newman said. “Once we hit that 2,000 mark then we get 15 percent of the total revenue sales for the entire day.”

Students from Olympic will showcase their talents for the community during the fundraiser. The art program will have student work on display in Barnes and Noble during the event. The jazz choir will perform at 1:00 p.m., and members of the string band will be performing sporadically throughout the day.

Olympic High School’s mascot, Troy the Trojan, will also be on hand for pictures and to get customers excited about supporting local schools.

Purchases made in the cafe will benefit the book fair, and the baristas will be adding their own creative efforts to the fundraiser. Newman said baristas have crafted a specialty Olympic Trojan beverage for sale only on Saturday.

The Kitsap Mall Barnes and Noble does fundraisers like this one about 25 times per year, Devlin said: “Always for nonprofits that have as their main focus education or literacy or the arts.”
