POULSBO – An 11-year-old boy injured in a fatal North Kitsap car crash Saturday night remained in serious condition Monday.
Two died in the 11:30 p.m. wreck on State Highway 3 when an SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another SUV head-on, according to a State Patrol statement.
Killed in the crash was Wesley A. Schmidt, 60, of Puyallup, driving a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Schmidt’s vehicle was identified by investigators as crossing the centerline.
Also killed was Michael R. Kelly, 50, of Kent, who was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee.
In the vehicle with Kelly was his wife, Rosemarie O. Kelly, 45, who suffered a spinal injury in the wreck. She was taken to Harrison Medical Center for treatment.
William Kelly, 11, the couple’s son, suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. A spokeswoman for the hospital said Monday William was in serious condition and remains in the intensive care unit.
The couple’s 4-year-old daughter was riding in the car, but was not injured in the crash.
A call to a Harrison Medical Center nursing supervisor to check on Rosemarie Kelly’s condition was referred to the hospital’s public relations office. A message at the office was not returned.
State Patrol spokeswoman Krista Hedstrom said the collision is still under investigation, and may take up to a month until toxicology results can be reviewed by investigators.
