HANSVILLE — Due to the quick response of several agencies, a 7-year-old boy was reunited with his family after he became separated during a walk around Point No Point Lighthouse in Hansville.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson said the mother of the boy called for help at 4:59 p.m. Friday. The family’s hometown was not immediately known.

The woman went for a walk with her four children — a two-year-old, a four-year-old, the 7-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl — to the east of Point No Point. Wilson said the family was on a trail and the 13-year-old had gone up ahead. The 7-year-old ran ahead to meet with his sister. When the mother called for everyone to turn around, she found the 13-year-old at the lighthouse but not the 7-year-old. The family searched for about an hour before calling 9-1-1.

Wilson said about 15 to 20 ground searchers from the Kitsap County Explorers search and rescue crew went to Hansville, as well as a boat from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and from Suquamish Police. Wilson said boats from the sheriff’s office and the Coast Guard were also en route.

The 7-year-old was found around 7:15 p.m. just north of Eglon Beach. According to reports, the boy had not found his sister, and became confused when he tried to return to the lighthouse. Instead of heading northwest, he headed south.

The NKF&R boat crew spotted him from the beach and took him aboard. Wilson said the 7-year-old is “healthy.”

Wilson said an instrumental part in finding the boy was a photographer that had been at Point No Point, and photographed barefoot, child-size footprints in the sand heading south. Without knowing which direction the boy had walked in, Wilson said the photographs helped focus the search efforts.

“It will be a happy Easter weekend for this family,” Wilson said.
