At least one local business is tapping into the Christmas spirit to boost sales numbers.

With the economy stalled and heading into reverse, many people are looking to the holidays to provide some much-needed cheer. And local businesses are no different.

“Landscaping wasn’t doing anything,” said Jody Greseth, the owner of JD’s Landscape Service and Design in Port Orchard.

So this year, Greseth said he joined forces with his wife Lorrie, daughter April and even 1-year-old pup Tater Tot to create and sell custom wreaths.

“No two are alike,” said Greseth, explaining that the family buys everything from the decorations to the noble fir branches locally, then lets their creativity loose.

“I am enjoying the heck out of this,” Greseth said, showing off some of the custom wreathes recently. Ranging in size from about one- to three-feet in diameter, the finished products range in price from $16 to $62.

“We started with 100, and now we’re making another 100, because they’re selling,” he said.

The family creates the wreaths in their workshop at 5333 Collins Road, which he said is open from about 8 a.m. “until dark.” Customers can either buy the wreaths fully-formed, or help create their own vision, as well.

But Greseth isn’t waiting for customers to come to him. He has decked out his truck with 14 of the wreaths, and has visited numerous businesses such as banks, car washes and wine sellers to display and sell them.

He said he will also be on hand at Port Orchard’s Chimes and Lights celebration this Saturday to sell the wreaths.

And though the wreaths may help keep his business humming, Greseth said it is also bringing his family together during the holidays as he, his wife and his daughter are all gathered in the workshop creating the wreaths together.
