Among the items stolen during a burglary last week of Silverdale’s Old Town Curio were the original sketches used in Richard LeMieux’s book about homelessness, “Breakfast at Sally’s.”

And although the drawings and other items reported missing after the theft were valuable – estimated to have occurred between Monday, Aug. 23, and Tuesday, Aug. 24 – it was mostly sentimental. The other stuff, swords and a bowler hat, weren’t worth much.

But the safe was special, a heavy, antique strongbox that contained little value to thieves.

“We’re hoping they take an axe to it, because they will break their arm if they do,” said Jennifer Gordon, wife of owner Michael Gordon. Michael Gordon drew the sketches in the book by Kitsap’s LeMieux, but also missing were random, mostly low-end curios and reproductions.

“It’s very strange,” Jennifer Gordon said.

The owners of the shop, which opened in February, told a Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy they suspect a person who visited the store removed a dowel securing a window, allowing thieves to slip in.
