A 22-year-old Bremerton woman was arrested and booked into Kitsap County Jail Wednesday after police say she suffocated her infant son.

Last November, Bremerton police responded to the residence of Amelia Day regarding an unresponsive baby, according to a BPD press release. When authorities arrived on scene, the five-week-old baby was pronounced dead. Day initially stated her son rolled himself over in his bassinet and she woke up to find him not breathing.

BPD detectives investigated the scene and statements made by Day were found to be inconsistent, according to BPD. The Kitsap County Coroner’s office performed the autopsy, determining the cause of death to be “undetermined suffocation.”

The investigation continued as interviews were conducted with family members, roommates, friends and previous reports from Child Protective Service, according to BPD. The investigation, police say, revealed that Day had a history of violence toward herself and others. Day revealed to investigators that she had lied during the beginning of the investigation.

Day disclosed that she was mad because her son would not stop crying, prompting her to throw his baby bottle across the room while holding him tight against her chest until he stopped making sounds and stopped moving, per BPD. After about five to ten minutes, her son stopped making any sounds and she continued to hold him tightly for an additional two minutes before laying him back down on the bed.

Day then went to sleep and called 911 when she woke up, the release states. During an interview, Day acknowledged she killed her son, saying it was an accident, police say.

On Thursday morning, Day was being held in Kitsap County Jail on $1,000,000 bail.
