The Bremerton City Council voted 8-0 Wednesday supporting a resolution to bring a Sept. 11 memorial to Evergreen Rotary Park.

Councilwoman Carol Arends was absent.

The memorial, which will include steel beams salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center, was turned down in April by the Port of Silverdale Board of Commissioners, when the Kitsap 9-11 Memorial Committee sought to build the structure at the Silverdale Waterfront Park. In October, the Bremerton Parks and Recreation Commission recommended to the City Council that the memorial be built at Evergreen Rotary Park.

The council appointed Councilman Jim McDonald to the Kitsap 9-11 Memorial Committee and will name two residents or city staff members to serve on the group’s design subcommittee.

The memorial committee is privately raising money to build and maintain the memorial. Mayor Patty Lent said the goal is to have the memorial complete or at least started before the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks next year so a dedication ceremony can take place.
