Holly (Jergenson) Rubino of Bremerton graduated magna cum laude from Western Washington University on March 21 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary child development.
MOSCOW, IDAHO — Miranda Carman of Bremerton recently graduated from the University of Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in English.
AWARD WINNERS
Tracyton resident and sixth-grader Andrew Kain has been recognized as a Johns Hopkins Scholar and presented with the “State Award with Highest Honors.” He is a student at Silverwood School, an independent school located on Central Valley Road. He is the son of Chris and Helene Kain. He and fellow Silverwood classmates Keith Christen and Christina Goessman, both of Poulsbo, and former classmate Olivia Mansker-Stoker of Poulsbo, were selected based on test scores taken through Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
Three Bremerton High School student-athletes were bestowed the prestigious Semancik Scholarship awards for the 2007-08 school year.
They are Christopher Martindale, Jacki Hill and Jennifer Smalley. All have performed exceptionally in the school, on the field and in the community.
This year the Semancik Foundation added a new name to its scholarship headline giving honor to former Bremerton City Councilman, community achiever and international Bremerton ambassador Al Colvin who died in February. Smalley received the Semancik-Al Colvin Scholarship for her involvement in the community.
Former Head Coach Chuck Semancik truly cared for his players, especially those who had to overcome adversity. The foundation seeks student-athletes who parallel those who Semancik enjoyed. Twenty-three student-athletes have been given scholarships since its inception in 2000. A fourth scholarship will be announced at the Semancik Golf tournament on Sept. 20 as a continuing scholarship to one of the former Semancik nominees during these last eight years.

SUNDAY ENVIRONMENTAL CHAT
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in East Bremerton recently started a Sunday morning discussion group on environmental issues.
The group meets at 9 a.m. between services and studies ways individuals and groups can reduce their energy dependence, simplify their lifestyles and reduce their carbon footprint. The meetings are open to the community and St. Paul’s welcomes anyone who would like to participate.
SPANISH IMMERSION
The Bremerton School District is currently accepting registration for its elementary Spanish Immersion program. This year, the district plans to offer the program to English-speaking kindergarten and first-grade students. The curriculum and instruction of this program is designed to help children become bilingual in English and Spanish. The current kindergarten teacher, Hortensia West, is allowing up to three adult classroom visitors per day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. FARMER’S MARKET
The Bremerton Farmers Market’s 2008 season is every Thursday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. through Oct. 9. The market is at Seaside Community Church at Evergreen Park in Brem-erton. Local farmers will sell their homegrown produce and plant starts and artists will offer handmade works. Also, live entertainment, barbecue, new vendors products including homemade breads and sodas. YOUTH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Ashley Gardens at Bremerton, an Alzheimer’s and memory care community located at 3231 Pine Road, is seeking youth for its Summer Youth Volunteer Program through August. Volunteers visit with clients, assist with life enrichment programs, play games, cards, sing and help with administrative work. Youth ages 10 to17 years old may apply.
