Bremerton pedestrian in critical condition

A 35-year-old female Navy member struck by a car while crossing Burwell Street Tuesday morning was listed in critical condition.

The woman was taken to Tacoma General Hospital following being hit as she attempted to cross at a Chester Avenue crosswalk.

The victim is stationed aboard the USS John C. Stennis and was crossing the street at about 6:18 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle traveling east.

A vehicle on the inside lane had stopped to let the woman cross, while the driver of the curbside vehicle failed to see her and drove through the crosswalk, Bremerton Police Sgt. Wendy Davis said.

A request was made to airlift the victim to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but that was ruled out due to weather complications, Davis said.

She was rushed to Tacoma General instead, where a nursing supervisor gave her condition in the afternoon.

Traffic was shut down on Burwell Street between State Avenue and Warren Avenue until 9:10 a.m.

The driver failed to see the pedestrian due to poor weather and visibility, Davis said. An investigation is in progress, but Davis said it will likely take weeks.
