BREMERTON — Parents of a Bremerton High School student contacted the Bremerton Police Department the night of March 16 after the student overheard others discussing a possible violent incident being planned.
The discussion was non-specific and the reporting student said they did not know the other students, according to the BPD press release.
Bremerton Police immediately contacted Bremerton High administrators, and spoke directly with the student as well as other students who may have had information. Officers also viewed security video from the previous day to attempt to identify who may be involved.
This morning, the High School Resource Officer from BPD, as well as other officers and administrators, are on site. Parents and students have been notified by the district.
“Our students and staff safety are always top priority,” said Patty Glaser, communications coordinator for the school district.
As detectives continue to work on the information, BPD is not receiving any information to indicate that the threats are substantiated or credible.
“The school district and department have worked together as a team, as we always do in these types of incidents,” said Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan. “We have been all over this from the first report, and the district is balancing our aggressive follow up and investigation with an abundance of caution and good communication with parents and students.”
Glaser said, “I first want to thank the students for having the courage to come forward and report this to their parents. I want to further emphasize our commitment to providing our students a learning environment free from threats and fear, allowing them to focus on their education.”
The School Resource Officer, district administrators, additional uniformed officers and detectives are present at the school today to increase security and conduct follow up.
