BREMERTON — A Bremerton orthopedic surgeon accused of sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old foreign exchange student faces possible disciplinary action by the state Department of Health.
Dr. Larry Iversen is charged in Superior Court with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class C felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
His medical license status is listed as “retired active in-state” on the Health Department’s online database. But that could change.
According to Rick Glein, a lawyer for the state Department of Health’s Medical Quality Assurance Commission, the commission decided to authorize an investigation of Iversen after reviewing documents related to the law enforcement investigation. The commission transferred the case to the secretary of the Department of Health, according to Glein.
According to charging documents, Iversen disclosed to a sheriff’s detective that he met the girl — a teenager from Hungary — during an earlier exchange visit here in 2016 through the Rotary Club of East Bremerton. According to the investigator’s report, Iversen was on a Rotary Club committee charged with ensuring foreign exchange students are safe and he “assists in writing policy and training of youth protection.” In addition to having sex with the teen, he also allegedly gave her medications, one of which was an antibiotic.
Kitsap News Group left phone messages for Iversen on Nov. 9 and 10.
