Another jail death
The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed yet another death of an inmate inside the jail in Port Orchard, the third such instance in five months.
A 43-year-old woman had been brought to the jail after being arrested Nov. 7 by Bremerton police on suspicion of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
The following morning, corrections officers found the woman unresponsive in her cell. Officers administered CPR until South Kitsap Fire and Rescue responded, but she died of an unknown cause. Port Orchard police will again conduct an independent investigation.
The woman later was identified as Dana L. McGranahan. Cause and manner of death are pending return of toxicology and further investigation.
In July, 46-year-old Rhonda McKelvy was found dead in her room, caused by a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, a county coroner reported, while 58-year-old Karl Kannekkeburg died during the booking process.
Life drawings
Over 75 people turned out for the one-night showing of nude drawings at the Bainbridge Island Library done by 13 members of the Strawberry Hills Artists Group.
Wine and hors d’oeuvres were served.
The show of other works by the group, without the nude drawings, continues through November at the library.
BARN bazaar
Hundreds of handcrafted items will be available directly from their local makers at the 7th annual BARN Bazaar Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network is located at 8890 Three Tree Lane on BI.
Over 40 vendors are expected with creations made out of fused glass and silkscreen along with jewelry, art prints, wooden bowls, clothing and more.
Proceeds go to the artists. The BARN Bistro will be open. BARN is a nonprofit community center for craft and invention.
Free holly
Weed Warriors and volunteers will trim and tag small, medium and large bundles of holly from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 24 at Battle Point Park picnic shelter on Bainbridge Island.
Volunteers will get free bundles that day.
Everyone else can get free holiday bundles, while supplies last, at Town & Country Market in Winslow.
Holly is one of the top three invasive plants on BI. Oregon grapes should be planted instead. And its berries should be disposed of in the trash, a news release says.

BIMA movie
Bainbridge Island Museum of Art continues its smARTfilms series with “Squaring the Circle” Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
The documentary tells the story of two men who became unlikely friends after a drug bust in 1964 at a Cambridge house. They ended up creating album covers for groups like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, the Rolling Stones, The Who, Black Sabbath, Paul McCartney and others.
Pedestrian death
A 60-year-old Bremerton-area resident was killed Nov. 7 after being hit by a vehicle in west Bremerton.
The woman was identified as Roberta Winslow.
Officials were dispatched at 8:35 a.m. to Kitsap Way near Weslon Place. The road between Ostrich Bay and Oyster Bay avenues was closed for several hours as crews from local and state departments worked to clean up and investigate the collision.
The victim, a woman, died at the scene. The 32-year-old woman driver and a 7-year-old child inside the vehicle were not hurt.
Suspect dead
The man suspected of robbing the Food Mart & 76 gas station off Highway 3 in Gorst Oct. 16 has died of a drug overdose, a Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office report says.
Police had been on the lookout for the man for weeks after he entered the Food Mart wearing a mask and demanded cash from the clerk at gunpoint. He took off in a red pickup with a large box containing cartons of cigarettes and a box of cash.
The truck, later confirmed to be stolen, was found Nov. 4 in Lakebay in Pierce County. The suspect was found dead in the driver’s seat.
New PIO
Krista Carlson joins Kitsap County as the new communications manager and public information officer.
The position is the primary media liaison and spokesperson on general county issues and announcements. She begins her position Nov. 27.
Carlson, a Washington State University graduate, brings over 20 years of professional communications experience, directing communications for several state agencies and the Bremerton and Bethel school districts, and as a news writer with KING 5.
