Flooding from a burst sprinkler system and power outage has closed the Poulsbo Marine Science Center indefinitely and damaged at least one of its marine habitats.

The building’s sprinkler system froze and burst in an office on the upper floor Monday night, said Dan Wilson, assistant public works director for the City of Poulsbo, which owns the building.

Animals in the center’s tropical tank died because of the power outage, according to a notice on the center’s website written by aquarium director Patrick Mus.

Crews were assessing the damage and removing wet carpet Monday. Wilson said first responders reported four feet of standing water in a portion of the upstairs office, which caused floors to bubble and cracked walls. It is likely carpeting and some dry wall will need to be replaced throughout the building, Wilson said.

The upstairs space is rented by Sealaska Environmental, a Seattle-based resource management service. It was not yet clear how long the repairs would take or when the building’s tenants could return to normal operation.
