Cable repair causes power outage

Power to a large portion of Port Orchard was lost during the lunch hour Tuesday as repairs were being made to a cable on Mitchell Avenue, according to Puget Sound Energy.

A spokeswoman said while a “burned-out cable was being repaired and tied back online, another weak spot in the line caused the outage.”

She said 1,354 customers were affected and the power was out from 12:26 p.m. until 1:08 p.m.

According to witness reports, business affected included Fred Meyer, Koi’s Bistro, Safeway and Starbucks. South Kitsap High School did not lose power, but the outage did affect the South Kitsap School District offices.

Andy Larson of the Washington State Department of Transportation said crews are working on the utility lines along Sedgwick Road, but he was not aware of a power outage, nor had he been informed of a planned outage.
