NAVY LEAGUE: The monthly luncheon for the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Navy League will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Bangor Plaza (formerly called the Trident Ballroom, CMO) Naval Base Kitsap – Bangor. Retired Navy Capt. Will Lent will be speaking on the “Battle of Leyte Gulf”, which is considered the most extensive sea battle in history. This was a real turning point of WWII in the Pacific.

CHADD: “Communication & AD/HD” will be presented by Bruce Weaber, MA, marriage and family therapist at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 to the Kitsap Branch of CHADD, the local AD/HD (Attention Deficit Disorder) support group. Discussion will follow, and all are welcome. There is no charge and no pre-sign up needed.

BUGS: The Bremerton Urban Garden Society (BUGS) will be hosting a series of gardening classes called “Grow Your Own Food” at the Sylvan Way branch of the Kitsap Regional Library this winter and spring. Classes are free and start at 6:30 p.m. The first class will be on Feb. 12 with Laura Pittman-Hewitt discussing garden planning and soil preparation. KITSAP QUILTERS: Kitsap Quilters will host “It’s Rainin’ Quilts” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 at President’s Hall at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. DEMENTIA SUPPORT: Ashley Gardens at Bremerton an Alzheimer’s and memory care community located 3231 Pine Road will host an Alzheimer’s and dementia support group at 7 p.m. Feb. 20. The support group will be held at The Willows at 3201 Pine Road and hosted by Ashley Gardens of Bremerton Life Enrichment Director Janet Presley. This group is open to the public.

MOAA: The Kitsap Chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America will hold its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. Feb. 22 at the Elks Lodge, 4131 Pine Road NE, Bremerton.
Guest speaker at the meeting will be CDR Michael Greenwalt, senior chaplain at the Bremerton Naval Hospital. He will recount his experiences as a chaplain in Iraq, and dealing with stress at the hospital.

TAX COUNSELING: The IRS and AARP jointly sponsor a program staffed by volunteers to electronically prepare and file income tax returns at no cost to the taxpayers. Although intended for elderly and low-income families, no taxpayer will be turned away. Note however, taxpayer’s returns requiring the reporting of significant business income or any loss, or any rental income are beyond the scope of this program. Tax-Aide volunteers are prepared to handle all 2007 tax law changes.
Taxpayers must bring a photo identification, documents verifying the Social Security numbers of all persons on the tax return and all 2007 tax documents, such as statements of income from wages, retirement, social security, interest and or dividends. It is advisable to bring a checkbook to provide account numbers for electronic funds transfer and a copy of the 2006 return for comparison purposes. If in doubt about the paperwork, bring it all and let us sort it out.
Plan to arrive early. We try not to begin preparation of a new return during the last half hour before closing time.
