Kitsap fire departments responded to a brushfire in the area of Kaster Drive NE and NE Winters Road near East Bremerton around 7 p.m. Monday.
The call came in at 6:58 p.m. Oct. 8 and was upgraded to second alarm brushfire at 7:53 p.m. The fire was approximately a half-acre in size and was contained about an hour and a half after being reported. Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Bremerton Fire Department, Poulsbo Fire Department and North Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded to the scene.
Preliminary investigation revealed a campsite built in the woods. A 15-year-old male came forward later that night and admitted that he had a campfire in the woods with his friends on Saturday. They thought they had fully extinguished it before leaving the area. The County Fire Marshal was called to investigate, but no structures were threatened.
Washington State is currently under a Phase 2 Burn Ban and there is no outdoor burning allowed. A thrown cigarette, small campfire or fireworks can all have devastating results when our land is as dry as it is right now, according to Central Kitsap spokeswoman Ileana LiMarzi.
