PORT ORCHARD — Spotty, drippy weather couldn’t dissuade about 600 people — many who were former students, teachers and staff members — from joining together May 15 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cedar Heights Middle School.
When the school first opened in 1969 as Cedar Heights Junior High, the South Kitsap community was a different, smaller and more rural place. But then, like today, the rainy weather can do a number on those who have attended and worked at the school. So much so, that the school’s moniker selected by the principal when it opened — the Raindevils — is as appropriate as ever.
In addition to games, food and fun at the event, a convincing 42-0 football win over rival Marcus Whitman tied a proverbial ribbon on the anniversary celebration. Following the game, a crowd of celebrants — enough to form a “50” at the 50-yard line — gathered for an aerial photo taken by a camera-equipped drone.
