A few weeks ago, the Port Orchard Independent hosted a student, Darisha Marte, from Cedar Heights Junior High. Darisha job-shadowed with us during an assignment for her school. Originally from New York, she moved to Kitsap last year. She joined reporter Sara Miller at The Brothers Greenhouses to tour the property, interview the staff and learn what it is like to be a journalist.After encouraging her to ask questions and pitch ideas about how she would write the story, we asked Darisha to write about what she learned and what interests her about this profession:

What inspired me to be a journalist was knowing that in the future, I would be waking up every morning and have the opportunity to do what I enjoy most, which is reading, writing and taking small pieces of information and turning them into a bold and organized publication.

The best part was realizing that this career choice is a great opportunity for me to travel to different parts of the world and be inspired by other people’s life experiences and journeys.

It’s being able to tell their story and giving them a means of expression, making their voices be heard and helping them make a difference in their communities.

I had the pleasure of job-shadowing Sara Miller of the Independent, and I saw firsthand how critical it is to work as a team in order to get the job done.

We interviewed two very kind, hardworking women at a creative Hobbit-themed greenhouse (The Brothers Greenhouses). We got to see beautiful plants and paintings and hear their story of how the development came about. I believe that in any job, no matter your salary, it is important to do something that you truly love and what makes you happy. Every day is not going to be so perfect, but doing what you love will make it memorable.
