Celebrate summer at Rock the Dock concert series

Now in its fourth year, the summer’s entertainment lineup features 16 special performances over eight nights, encompassing a wide musical spectrum — including folk, country, pop, jazz and rock and roll — and even includes salsa lessons.

BREMERTON — The Rock the Dock concert series kicked off on July 4 at the Bremerton Marina.

Now in its fourth year, the summer’s entertainment lineup features 16 special performances over eight nights, encompassing a wide musical spectrum — including folk, country, pop, jazz and rock and roll — and even includes salsa lessons.

The Downtown Bremerton Association took over the Rock the Dock concert series in 2015. Michael Goodnow, president of the DBA, said when they took over, they moved the events from Fridays to Saturdays, and increased the number of concerts from four to eight.

This year, he said they added an extra hour to the show.

“Last summer we had one band come out and play, take a break and play,” Goodnow said. “This year, we have an opening band most nights, so this Saturday, for instance, our headliner’s Heart by Heart … then who we have opening is Micaela Kingslight, who is new to the area.”

Heart by Heart is “considered a spin-off” of Heart, according to the band website (www.heartbyheart.com), “because it includes Heart’s co-foudning member and bassist Steve Fossen and original Heart drummer Mike Derosier.” Both Fossen and Derosier are Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members. Opening act Kingslight is a guitarist whose “voice is often compared to Fiona Apple and Alicia Keyes, while her guitar playing is reminiscent of Carlos Santana, David Gilmore and Jimmy Page,” according to the press release.

“We’ll bring out some different crowds and introduce each other to (each other’s music),” Goodnow said.

The upcoming performance schedule includes Micaela Kingslight and Heart by Heart on July 9; the Malo Combo with salsa dance lessons on July 23; the Jazz Ambassadors and Soul Siren on July 30; Afton Pratter and Chance McKinney on Aug. 6; the Boy Blue and Tres Hombres Aug. 13; Small Tribes and Nick Drummond Band on Aug. 20; and the Randy Linder Band on Aug. 27.

“It’s real quality entertainment, and it’s free to the community because of the sponsors,” said Michael Goodnow, president of the Downtown Bremerton Association. “The budget for this … was probably close to $40,000, so we’ve really brought in some good talent.”

All concerts are from 5-8 p.m. Saturdays at the Bremerton Marina, and include food vendors and trucks, as well as beer and wine gardens that open at 4 p.m. Rock the Dock T-shirts will be for sale for $20. Concerts are free and open to the public. Goodnow said that while some chairs are provided, people are encouraged to bring their own chairs or seat cushions just in case.

“Our biggest partner is probably the Port of Bremerton,” Goodnow said. “It’s a good fit for us to partner with them. It’s a great space down there, but we can attract … people form the whole county, but also boaters, whether they’re local boaters or even distance boaters.

“The DBA’s mission is to kind of help with marketing, getting people back downtown, seeing how it’s changed, so it’s a good fit.”

On the Fourth of July kick-off concert, which Goodnow said featured local favorites, local up-and-coming stars and a Prince tribute band, about 1,000 people attended, which took them all the way up to the start of the Sinclair Inlet fireworks show. Goodnow said he hopes to see 1,000 people at each concert.

“The energy was great, people had a good time,” Goodnow said. “It’s great to have people come downtown … and do something that’s free.”

Rock the Dock is made possible by a partnership of the Port of Bremerton, City of Bremerton and the Downtown Bremerton Association. Sponsors include Anthony’s at Sinclair Inlet, B&B Auto Repair, Cash America, Fingers Duke Design Studio, Fred Meyer, Kitsap Credit Union, the Manette Clinic, OneBuild, Sound West Group, Tim Ryan Construction and West Hills Autoplex.
