David Fry awarded for production with KSTW-TV.
David Fry has a shiny, golden statue sitting on his computer desk these days.
The 2000 Central Kitsap High School grad won an Emmy in June at the 45th annual Northwest Regional Emmy Awards in Seattle.
Fry, who now lives in Renton, works at KSTW-TV and won an Emmy as a producer/editor in the advanced media-arts/entertainment category alongside his colleague Howard Shack.
This is Fry’s first Emmy win and one of the first productions he’s helped create at KSTW-TV.
“I basically got a job at KSTW and it was the first piece I’ve ever worked on,” Fry said. “I couldn’t believe that one of my pieces won an Emmy.”
Fry and Shack created the video entitled “Spectrum Dance” last November. The piece revolves around world-renowned choreographer Donald Byrd who serves as artistic director at the Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle. In November, Byrd and his dancers were rehearsing for their dance performance entitled “Interrupted Narratives/War.” The dance performance is about American soldiers who have died in Iraq.
“It was a powerful piece about what soldiers go through,” Fry said.
Fry and Shack submitted the “Spectrum Dance” piece to the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Northwest Chapter, which judges selections from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Montana.
“It’s judged by my peers and people in the area and they decide whether or not it’s Emmy worthy,” Fry said.
Fry attended the awards ceremony in June to see if he and Shack won and said it was a memorable experience.
“It was kind of nerve-racking when we were sitting there waiting for our category to come up,” Fry said.
While a CKHS student, Fry was involved with the school’s broadcasting department and went on to attend the Center for Creative Media in Texas.
“I want to tell stories, I want to tell good stories,” Fry said. “I want to tell stories about people who people can relate to.”
He admits that life hasn’t changed much since winning an Emmy and hopes this first golden statue isn’t his last.
“There’s no limos picking me up at my house and I didn’t get a pay raise or anything,” Fry said.
Fry creates videos for the CW11’s Underground, which airs a 30-minute show every other month on KSTW Channel 11. The Underground posts new videos on its Web site every two weeks.
