Charges were filed Tuesday in Kitsap County District Court against a man involved in a Dec. 31 shooting in South Kitsap.
James Charles Mathes, 44, of Port Orchard, was charged with two counts of first-degree assault and unlawful imprisonment.
Charging papers stated that Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a restraining order violation in the 8400 block of Bethel Burley Road. Witnesses reported that Mathes was holding a woman at gunpoint.
After deputies arrived at the scene, Mathes came outside the home with a revolver pointed at the woman and was attempting to leave the residence in a vehicle. Two deputies told Mathes to drop the gun as they approached the vehicle, stated court records.
Court documents stated Mathes opened fire on the two deputies and the deputies returned fire, striking Mathes three times. The vehicle was hit several times. Mathes was taken to a Tacoma hospital with two bullet wounds and a broken arm.
Bail was set at $1 million for Mathes who has been moved to the Kitsap County Jail.
