A Port Orchard woman who is the assistant cheerleading coach of Klahowya High School is accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from a Klahowya Cheer Boosters fund, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The 28-year-old woman was arrested Monday after admitting to taking cash out of a cheerleading booster club account at Kitsap Credit Union that she controlled.

Representatives from the Central Kitsap School District contacted sheriff’s deputies in December regarding the theft or misappropriation of money from the Klahowya Cheer Boosters fund. Bank records showed an account that should have had at least $5,570 was nearly empty. Bank statements showed multiple large cash withdrawals from the account by the suspect.

Deputies contacted the suspect Monday and she agreed to meet with them. She gave deputies $4,800 in cash at the meeting and said that was what she felt was missing from the account. Initially, she did not admit to taking the money but said she was paying it back because she was responsible for the account and let the money disappear.

She later confessed to taking the money, saying she didn’t ultimately know how much she took and that she used the money to spend on items she wanted, the sheriff’s office reported.

The woman was arrested for first-degree theft and embezzlement and held on $50,000 bail.
