Calling herself an artist and theater geek, Christie Fitch, artist, singer and actor is FAB’s (Fine Arts Boosters of Kingston High School) first featured artist of 2012-13.
A senior, Christie says of art, “It is good for my soul!”
Once again I am astounded by the clear love of the arts by our featured artists. While not a fan of math and science (the darlings of the Race for the Top, the movement much in the news to reform and privatize education), Christie loves to express herself. She sings mezzo soprano, favors musical theater, and has taken voice lessons for five years. She acts and has been in 12 shows, including Princess Winnifred in KHS’s “Once Upon a Mattress” performed last spring.
She draws but didn’t take the time until last year where she learned a lot from teacher James Andrews. “He changed my way of looking at the world. He taught me to see a ‘skewed’ vision on a flat canvas.”
Although she doesn’t know anything about cars, “my boyfriend’s truck was at Jeff Head, my favorite beach, and I whipped up this little graphite drawing, ‘That Good Ol’ ’86 Chevy.’ ”
Christie says, “I definitely think more students should be involved in the arts. They might not know how much they enjoy it until they try.” This from a young woman whose life is art, living at a time of crisis in our educational system and a pulling away from what enriches all our lives. The arts are important in our community because, Christie says, “they get people together like at festivals, plays, concerts and it’s fun.”
Regarding all the local opportunities at Kingston High School, she adds, “It’s definitely good to get out there and see incredible talent.”
Your first opportunity to experience incredible talent is a play, Oct. 19-21. Titled “Election,” it is a timely and hilarious new play that parodies the 2008 election.
Plan to show up more at KHS arts events. Check out FAB’s Facebook page.
Christie thinks Kingston has a great sense of community with friendly, mellow people who greet each other on the beach and walkways. By joining FAB (e-mail lidenbode@aol.com) and advocating for the arts we show her and the rest of the artists at our high school we care about the arts, we care about them and we care about living the artful life in our neck of the woods. Christie’s caring spirit for others is leading her toward a career in nursing while she continues to share her passion for the arts.
