The Bremerton City Council authorized the Public Works Department to purchase an electronic distribution kiosk for no more than $75,000 at the Feb. 11 study session.
The kiosk, located in Pendergast Park, was struck by a car Jan. 28. The city is pursuing compensation from the driver’s insurance company.
The kiosk controls lighting for the park.
Typically, such approvals would be made at a council meeting but they voted early so it could be replaced sooner. It takes about six weeks for the manufacturer to make the kiosk once an order is placed, said Chal Martin, public works director.
Public works requested $55,000 to replace the kiosk, which is expected to cost at least $45,000. However, City Attorney Roger Lubovich encouraged the council to increase the funds request from $55,000 to $75,000.
Lubovich doesn’t expect the kiosk to cost more than $55,000 but the additional $20,000 will save public works from needing council approval should more funds be needed.
The kiosk must be custom built to integrate with the city’s system and there was some confusion at the study session as to who would manufacture it, Lubovich said.
