The Bremerton City Council unanimously approved the purchase of the Park Avenue and Sixth Street Kitsap Bank building as the new site of the municipal court Wednesday.

The $1.7 million deal is expected to be finalized in the next few days, City Attorney Roger Lubovich said.

The sale is set to close by April 30 and the goal is to have the new court building running within six months after that date, following a few renovations.

But the renovations needed are few, Lubovich said, which makes the Kitsap Bank building a prime spot for the court.

“It’s just about as good a building as you can get,” he said, adding that the city’s plans for the building are already drawn.

The city has vied for the Kitsap Bank property since last fall, Lubovich said, and has only now arrived at a purchase agreement with the bank. It also considered purchasing the old Pacific Avenue post office, but renovations would have made the post office more expensive than the Kitsap Bank building, Lubovich said.

Bremerton has been renting the current court space at 900 Pacific Avenue for four years. When the city owns the Kitsap Bank building, the annual costs will be cheaper than what the city now pays in rent, Lubovich said.
