POULSBO — One part of the Viking Avenue improvement project is under way, and the city is planning a public meeting Aug. 11 to discuss the next part.

Between Aug. 5 and Aug. 7, a lane of the two-lane Viking Avenue NW will be closed intermittently for construction between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The length of road under construction runs from the McDonald’s restaurant at 20533 Viking Ave NW to State Highway 305. Traffic officials said motorists can expect delays.

Starting next week workers will remove existing asphalt from the roadway.

“For the next couple of months will be a gravel road,” Mike Lund, senior field inspector for the city, said in an email.

The road improvement project is scheduled to finish by the end of October.

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, the city is hosting an informal public meeting to answer questions and hear comments on the South Viking Avenue project.

The meeting is scheduled for the City Council chambers from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

City Engineer Andrzej Kasiniak and an employee of the design consultant, Parametrix, will attend the meeting, according to Ryan Farncomb, project assistant for the city.

The South Viking project proposes to use about $1 million in federal stimulus money from the first Viking Avenue project to refurbish about 1,000 linear feet of South Viking Avenue.

The project includes installing sidewalks, bike lanes, a turn lane and median and storm controls from near Bovella Lane to the south city limits.
