CK downs Vikings as swim teams ready for districts

SILVERDALE — Senior Jacklene Salwei set a new school record, but the North Kitsap varsity swimming and diving team could not stroke past the CK Cougars, losing 105-81.

Salwei clocked a 1:04.17 to win the 100 Butterfly as well as claiming a new school record. Viking Whitney Glebe also won the 200 freestyle, coming in at 2:16.76.

The loss is not as important to North Kitsap, which has already been successful in qualifying at least 16 girls to go to the district tournament next week at Henry Foss High School.

“We’ve been doing a terrific job,” said Head Coach Greg Braun. “We have a better team than in the past and much better depth and ability.”

Salwei has already qualified for the state tournament in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. But Braun admitted that the senior brings the whole package to the team, not just as an outstanding swimmer.

“(Salwei) provides leadership, and is a role-model in the water,” Braun said. “She’s given us strength in a lot of different positions.”

North Kitsap also has experienced divers in Krissy Dickson and Sara Rosario, and a newcomer in Nadia Ifland. Dickson placed first over her two teammates, with a 153.90. Rosario had a 151.10 score.

“All three divers have been very competitive,” Braun said. “Dickson and Rosario can compete at the district meet.”

If the pair can qualify at districts, they’ll go to zonals with a possible chance to go to state.

Freshman Whitney Glebe has also been impressive in the water, qualifying for districts in every event — an accomplishment for the team.

“We’ve never had that happen before,” Braun said.

Lindsay Archer has also been consistent and is looking to go far in the post-season, though she did not race in the CK meet. She has already qualified for districts.

“Lindsay has been outstanding in the sprint,” Braun said. “She’s really trying hard to get a state berth.”

Senior Christy Jones will be finishing her career at the high school with another amazing feat: she has broken a school record in the last three races.

As for overall team performance, Braun said the team looks to its leader, Salwei, as the person most likely to go the farthest.

“She has a good chance to place in the top 12,” Braun said. “But in the competition, she’ll have no room for error. Everything has to come together — but I do expect her to drop time.”
