Although Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue saw its usual number of calls multiplied by five since the year’s first winter storm struck Monday, there were no deaths or houses burnt to the ground.
Fire crews and emergency medical technicians received more than 90 calls Monday, according to a statement from the department.
Most of the calls were for car crashes, cars in ditches, trees falling into power lines, trees into homes and six house fires.
None of the fires were serious and department spokeswoman Theresa MacLennan said she knew of no deaths resulting from crashes.
“Folks who had to be on the road I think were driving pretty cautiously for the most part,” she said.
A house fire in South Kitsap drew a large response from South Kitsap Fire and Rescue, but Central Kitsap avoided major catastrophe, MacLennan said. She noted that Central Kitsap was “very fortunate” that it saw no serious fires, as firefighters were not forced to deal with a major fire at the expense of other calls for service.
“That really takes away resources for other calls,” she said.
