A sketch of one of the men suspected of armed robberies in Kitsap County last year does not depict slain cop killer Maurice Clemmons, Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Wilson said this week.

Kitsap and Pierce County officers conferred over the identity of the man in the sketch after it was noticed that Clemmons – shot dead following the murders of four Lakewood Police officers on Nov. 29 – resembled one of the men suspected of committing 11 robberies in Kitsap and Pierce counties.

That leaves open the investigations of a Kitsap robbery spree that began in April 2008, when two men wearing hooded sweatshirts and bandanas robbed the Dollar Tree Store on Silverdale Way in Silverdale.

In Septem–ber, two men dressed in a similar fashion robbed the Great Clips hair salon at in Port Orchard, and less than a week later, two armed men robbed an Auto Zone store in East Bremerton.

Wilson said the suspect sketch was released by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department after similar robberies there, and the similarities between the suspect and Clemmons were first brought to his attention by a reporter at the Seattle Times.

“There is a distinct similarity between (Clemmons and the sketch), other than the mole issue,” Wilson said, referring to the prominent mole on Clemmons’ left cheek that can be clearly seen in the mug shot released to the public after the Lakewood shootings. “Although, things like that can be easily covered.”

Wilson said he could not disclose more details as to why Pierce County officials believe the sketch is not of Clemmons, but insisted, “If (they) say it wasn’t him, it wasn’t him.”

Clem–mons, 37, entered a coffee shop in Parkland, near the McChord Air Force base, shortly after 8 a.m. Nov. 29 and gunned down four Lakewood officers execution-style.

Two days later, Clemmons himself was killed by a Seattle Police officer investigating a stolen vehicle in South Seattle.

Wilson said the investigations into the three Kitsap robberies are “still open.”
