CK school board to discuss new grad requirements, restructuring

The Central Kitsap school board meeting on Wednesday will involve discussion of moving 9th grade to high schools and changing updating graduation requirements.

The next Study Session and Regular Session of the School Board will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Jenne-Wright Administration Center. The Study Session will begin at 5:00 p.m. The Regular Session will begin at 6:30 p.m.

During the study session, the board will review a change in school configuration that could move 9th grade from Central Kitsap’s junior high schools to Olympic and Central Kitsap high schools.

According to board documents, this will be the second scheduled review by the school board. Community input meetings are scheduled for March 20, 25 and 26. The board’s final scheduled meeting for reconfiguration is marked to take place in June.

Also on the agenda for Wednesday are information on changes to CKSD’s high school graduation requirements, a report by the community finance committee on a 2014 school support levy and a presentation update on STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) in Central Kitsap schools.

Students in the class of 2013 and beyond will be subject to the following changes.

Required Subject Areas and Credits The following credits and subject areas of study shall be required of each candidate for graduation:

English 4

Mathematics (formerly 2.0)

Social Studies

Science 2

Occupational Education 1.5

Health and Fitness 2

Fine, Visual, Performing Arts  1

Electives 5.5   (formerly 6.5)               Total 22
