The Central Kitsap School District announced Friday it will close all schools beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 24 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
As of Friday, the Kitsap Public Health District has confirmed three positive tests of COVID-19 in the county; two of which are Bainbridge Island residents. The other is a South Kitsap resident. Health district officials have also confirmed 41 negative tests of COVID-19. At the state level, the department of health has confirmed 31 deaths and 457 cases of COVID-19 as of Friday morning.
“We know this decision will have an enormous impact on our students, staff, families and community,” read a statement posted to the Central Kitsap School District’s website and social media pages. “Our schools are so much more than just a place to learn. Although educating students is our primary mission, we also provide critical services and support to numerous families in our area”
The statement also noted the district is working on plans to continue serving students during the closure period. This includes food services, working with childcare partners and looking at ways to provide remote resources for students.
