The Central Kitsap School District (CKSD) has formed a committee to consider a request to change the name of Brownsville Elementary School. CKSD is seeking public input on the matter.

The renaming effort involves the late John “Bud” Hawk, a veteran who lived in Kitsap County and fought in WWII. Hawk received the country’s highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for his actions.

Hawk was also considered a dedicated and longtime educator in the Central Kitsap School District where he spent nearly three decades as teacher or principal at Tracyton, Brownsville and Woodlands elementary schools.

He spent the most time at Brownsville before retiring in 1983.

The renaming committee, which comprises parents, staff, alumni and community members, is working toward preparing a recommendation to the school board. As part of these efforts, the committee developed an online survey to determine the community’s interest in renaming all or a portion of Brownsville Elementary School after John “Bud” Hawk.

This survey will help guide the committee’s recommendation.

The survey is available now on the CKSD website. It will be available online until January 22. Current and former Brownsville students, staff and parents are encouraged to participate, as well as any interested community members.
