“KINGSTON – The Kingston Citizens Advisory Committee, once split on the proposed location of a new community center, has agreed that splitting community center functions is the best solution. The decision came at a specially scheduled meeting Wednesday specifically intended to hash out the Village Green park plan. If we had the money and if we had the land we would be pressured into making a decision about the Village Green, said Nick Jewett, co-chairman of the committee. We don’t have any money and we don’t have any land, he told a group of about 50 people who gathered at the Kingston Community Center for the meeting. The committee has been working with the county’s park department for the past year to develop a plan to take to Kitsap County Commissioners. The only pressing deadline is about 2002 when designers begin on the Kingston High School and would need to know if a community center was going to be planned on that site. Eighteen months to come to a consensus is kind of rushing it, Jewett joked. But the decision came relatively quickly to go with what has been labeled preferred concept, but add a community center and inquire about the land housing the North Kitsap Fire & Rescue headquarters for a possible community center site. The preferred concept plan agreed upon would designate Kole Kola Park as a village green where events such as the Farmer’s Market could be held. Active areas such as baseball fields, basketball courts, a community garden, the Kingston skatepark, and community center would be located at the current water treatment plant site once the plant is re-located. The committee also agreed that more study is needed on what the community wants from its community center. Members are kicking around the idea of putting together a survey to find out. The community center, committee members said would most likely house the library and meeting rooms. Large meetings could be held at one of the schools. The committee also plans to keep the Village Green plan on its monthly agenda to keep the plan rolling along. It’s kind of like baseball, Jewett said of the plan.
