Central Kitsap to host eight exchange students
Students at local Kitsap high schools will get an extra lesson in geography this year when they welcome international exchange students from around the world.
Central Kitsap High School will welcome Lilly from Germany and Emmi from Finland.
Olympic High School will welcome Eskild from Norway, Cassandra from Denmark, Yoshie from Japan, and Ronja from Finland.
Klahowya High School will welcome Carl from Sweden and Marika from Denmark.
The students will arrive in Kitsap County throughout the month of August to live with local host families and experience the American way of life for an academic year. They are sponsored by Aspect Foundation, a non-profit organization that strives to bridge cultures through international youth exchange.
Aspect Foundation is always seeking more families who want the unforgettable experience of hosting an international student like Lilly. Exchange students are aged 15 to 18, speak English, and have their own spending money and insurance. Volunteer host families provide room, board, and a loving home environment for a semester or academic year.

Residents needed for advisory boards
Residents are invited to get involved in the planning and management of Kitsap County parks by serving on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications from citizens to fill vacancies for Commissioner Districts two (South Kitsap) and three (Central Kitsap). There are also vacancies for a South Kitsap representative on the arts board; a Central Kitsap representative on the Noxious Weed Control Board and the Kingston Ferry Advisory Committee.
Advisory groups provide public input on county programs and serve as a knowledge pool and vital means of communication between citizens and county government.
Clerical and computer savvy volunteers sought
Volunteers are needed to assist with clerical projects in the Kitsap County Department of Community Development and data entry in the commissioners’ office. This is an opportunity to practice and fine tune office skills while gaining experience and local references for a resume.
Both projects are entry level but applicants must have the ability to operate a personal computer including word processing and database software with basic computer keyboarding skills. Work hours are flexible. The job site is in the County Administration Building, 619 Division Street, Port Orchard. A background check is required. Afton Prader to perform at Rock the Dock this week
Seabeck native and Klahowya Secondary School sophomore Afton Prader will perform today at the Rock the Dock concert series.
Music will begin at 6 p.m. Also featured is special guest Landin Gear.
Prader recently returned from Nashville where she recorded her second EP, “I Want A Truck.” Afton also won Best Country Songwriter and Best Teen Songwriter at the 2013 Indie Music Channel Songwriter Awards.
In its second season, Rock The Dock is a free summer concert series during August and features a lineup of local and national touring rock, blues and country performers.
The marina, owned and operated by the Port of Bremerton, and Kitsap Entrepreneurial Center have partnered on the concert series to entertain and help promote business in Bremerton’s Harbor District.
“Rock the Dock is a celebration of summer,” Port of Bremerton CEO Jim Rothlin said. “We love showing off our beautiful jewel of a marina and its surrounding vibrant community to boaters and non-boaters alike. We encourage everyone to come and enjoy the beauty of our waterfront and city while hearing from a selection of great musical talents.”
The Rock The Dock series is on the boardwalk adjacent to the Bremerton Marina. Several local food vendors and a beer garden featuring local microbrews will be there to provide food and beverages.
The season will end on Aug. 22, with the Northwest Navy Band “Passages,” a high-energy band that performs a wide variety of popular music from the 1960s to the present.

The Kitsap County Auditor’s Office is seeking individuals to serve on committees to draft voters’ pamphlet arguments for two local measures. Art and furniture sale benefits Alzheimer’s group
Ashley Gardens Memory Care and The Cottage Assisted Living will host an art and furniture sale from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 15, to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will be held at the Cottage Assisted Living, located at 3210 Rickey Road NE in Bremerton.
Several pieces of wall art, tables, chairs, lamps and decorative items will be featured. All proceeds raised will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, an annual event which will take place in Kitsap County on Sunday, September 14, 2014.
