This year’s selection is “The Boys in the Boat,” a tale of Americans and their quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and how they upstage Adolf Hitler during the games.

The idea behind the program is to get the public involved in reading the same book in order to encourage discussions and exchange of ideas.

Discussions regarding the book start in October. The author, Daniel James Brown, will visit Kitsap for three of the events related to the book. Details will be posted on the KRL website as October draws near.

KHS’s PetsWalk is moving to Poulsbo

The Kitsap Humane Society’s Annual PetsWalk is moving its county-wide event from the Kitsap County Fairgrounds to downtown Poulsbo and adding a 5K Run this year.

On July 12, at 9 a.m., the walk and run will begin from Sixth Avenue and Harrison Street, north of Lions Park, and conclude at the Waterfront Park in downtown.

The event at the waterfront will last until 1 p.m.

Pet lovers can begin signing up today by logging onto the Kitsap Humane Society website. All proceeds from PetsWalk help homeless pets at the Humane Society.  Participants can ask family, friends and co-workers to contribute pledges for their 1K or 5K run/walk for the animals.

The  Kitsap Humane Society’s website offers details on prizes awarded for different fundraising levels. Those who raise $300 can walk with a shelter dog. Walking with a shelter dog is limited to the first 10 walkers with $300 collected.

For the 5K “Gallop” – the run and our 5K/1K “Stroll” – the walk, participants must register online or by registration form. The entry fee is $15 for adults and $5 for kids. T-shirts are an additional $5 each.

Other highlights feature kids’ activities, kids dash, small dog races, microchip clinic (cost is $30), costume contest and parade, adoptable animals, music and more.

KHS encourages pet owners to bring along pets of all types (no livestock), breeds, age and beauty to scamper, amble, march and meander along the walk.  Walkers do not need to have a pet to participate.

Vendors offering pet products and supplies, music, animal exhibits and demonstrations will round out the activities throughout the day.

Participants of all ages are invited to pledge or donate at kitsap-humane.org/petswalk-2014 and create their own PetsWalk web page.

Kitsap Regional Library wins national recognition

Kitsap Regional Library is an honoree in the 2014 LibraryAware Community Award, presented by Library Journal and sponsored by EBSCO Information Services. The recognition includes a $5,000 prize.

“We are very happy to receive this recognition,” said Library Director Jill Jean. “We are even more excited about what is to come. Already as we have begun our strategic planning process for the next five years, we have identified some new and additional ways that the library can help support and connect our community.”

The Library Journal stated that KRL is “passionately, actively embedded in everything Kitsap County,” with more than 200 partnerships. It also added the following:

Community engagement is a “core pillar” of the library’s strategic plan that runs through 2015. The library commissioned a study by OrangeBoy Consulting to gather concrete data on users, the resources they most value, and preferred communication methods. KRL also sought feedback from community members, patrons, staff and nonusers as well.

Among KRL’s initiatives is BiblioTEC, which focuses on getting homeless and at-risk youth access to cutting-edge technology training, equipment and mentorship. The Coffee Oasis and KRL partner together along with The Agency, a staff-led advocacy team “that uses guerrilla marketing tactics to spark interest in the library.”

The library system has also collaborated with digital vendor OverDrive for developing and launching the first kids eReading Room. There will also be a study of staff to address needs, which WebJunction will use to develop “comprehensive training” for public libraries.

“If financial support is one metric of community engagement, Kitsap must be doing something right: two of its buildings are owned and supported completely by community non-profit groups, and a recently awarded million-dollar grant from the Kitsap Community Foundation will help support a new library in Kingston,” an article in the Library Journal stated.

Because of KRL’s ability to focus on community engagement as an “integral part” of the planning and assessment process, KRL was awarded third place for the 2014 LibraryAware Community Award.
