Every first Thursday at Tracyton Community Library is “Kids Day.” Come enjoy kid activities, make-and-take, free stuff. The fun begins at 2 p.m. The library is located at 351 NW Tracy Ave.

National Engineers Week for kids

KEYPORT – Engineers design the ships we sail, capture energy from the sun and take us into space. On Saturday, Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum, engineers will turn ideas into reality for children as part of National Engineers Week. The event is free.

Engineers and Reservists from the local Navy bases, along with museum and local volunteers, will conduct hands-on science and technology activities for children ages kindergarten to eighth grade. Children and parents can build periscopes, test electromagnets and even create robots. The purpose of the events is to help students learn practical applications of science, technology, engineering, and math.

This is the 18th year the Museum has participated in Discover “E” Day.

“Several hundred young people and their parents usually join us for this event. The volunteer engineers are actively engaged with young people all day. They are enthusiastic teachers and role models for the scientists of the future,” said Lindy Dosher, museum director.

‘Once Upon a Mattress’ at BHS

BREMERTON – Bremerton High School Performing Arts will present “Once Upon a Mattress,” the classic tale of the princess and the pea, but turned a bit sideways. It is a singing and dancing extravaganza. Tickets are $12 and $8 at the door of the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center. CSTOCK presents ‘Mary Poppins’

SILVERDALE – One of the most popular Disney movies of all time, “Mary Poppins” will be performed by CSTOCK Feb. 12 – March 6 at Central Kitsap Middle School.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical! Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”

Volunteer to help at Water Festival

BREMERTON — Help celebrate the 22nd year of the Kitsap Water Festival by volunteering. The festival takes place 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. The annual Water Festival hosts up to 1,200 third and fourth grade students from across the county. Students learn the importance of protecting precious water resources and practical ways to implement water quality measures at home.

Volunteers help with games, activities and setup and breakdown of the festival. In return, volunteers get to work outside, have fun, and are provided lunch and an official Kitsap Water Festival t-shirt.

English tutor training

Kitsap Adult Center for Education will be holding a two-part tutor training session 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday March 2 and all day Friday March 4. Trainings will be held at the Bremerton office at 616 5th St.

KACE tutors teach foreign-born adults English, or assist native-English speakers improve their skills or prepare for the GED.

Kitsap Audubon meets March 10

POULSBO – “Birding by habitat,” by Brian Bell, who is a professional birding guide and coauthor of the field guide, Birds of Washington State, will present at the next Audubon meeting. Bell is a past president of the Washington Ornithological Society and has taught Master Birder programs for Seattle Audubon. He also teaches birding classes at North Seattle and Shoreline Community Colleges, and Seattle and East Side Audubon. Seabeck resident has golden voice

SEABECK – The Royal Conservatory Music Development Program congratulates Margaret Johnston, who earned the National Gold Medal for scoring the top mark in the country on the Level 6 Voice assessment. Johnston takes lessons in Silverdale with Christine Usher at the Washington Academy of Music, a Music Development Program Founding School.

National Gold Medals are awarded each academic year (Sept. 1 to Aug. 31) to Music Development Program students in Preparatory A and B and Levels 1 to 10 who achieve the highest standard of excellence in the United States. Eligible candidates must score at least 80 percent on their assessment and must have completed the co-requisite theory requirements for their respective level and discipline. 69 students earned National Gold Medals this year, three of whom are from Washington.

Flying scholarships available

Cascade Warbirds is continuing to seek scholarship applications for Private Pilot ground school with introductory flights to inspire today’s young people to become the aviation pioneers of tomorrow.

Cascade Warbirds has teamed with Galvin Flight Service at Boeing Field, Seattle, to provide scholarship recipients with tuition, books and supplies, and two introductory instructional flights. The ground school portion comprises classroom lectures, visual presentations, group discussions, practical exercises, and field trips over a period of approximately 55 hours. Classes generally meet two weeknights per week for two and one-half hours and one Saturday per week for four hours over a period of six weeks. Successful completion of this private pilot ground school will qualify a student to take the FAA private pilot written exam.

This award also includes two instructional flights in a light aircraft, the make and model of which will be matched to the student. The first flight will occur part way through the ground school, based on the instructor’s recommendation, and the second flight will occur after the successful completion of the ground school course. Each flight will include a pre-flight briefing, actual taxi and runway procedures, introduction to radio communications, the take-off, a series of in-flight maneuvers, the return and landing and post-flight procedures. These two flights will be logged in the student’s personal logbook and count toward the minimum flight time required to earn a private pilot license.

This scholarship is available for students between the ages of 16 and 21 at the time of award. This scholarship is valued at $1,125 and a minimum of six awards will be made. Learn more at http://www.cascadewarbirds.org/scholarship.htm. The deadline to apply is March 25.

Silverdale Tax-Aide office to move

SILVERDALE – Due to the closing of the Billie Eider Community Center, the AARP Tax-Aide office will move to the Housing Authority’s Golden Tides II building at 9239 Bayshore Dr. NW in Silverdale. The Silverdale office will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning Feb. 2.

Tax-Aide is a free tax preparation service open to most taxpayers. The volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS and in Silverdale produce as many as 700 returns each year.
