Library book sales

The Silverdale Friends of the Library will hold their June monthly book sale 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, in the Hess room of the library located at 3450 NW Carlton St. in old town Silverdale.

Monday sales will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Mondays of June 6, 13, 20 and 21.

Book sale proceeds go to support different programs and needs for the library and especially for the summer youth reading program.

The library appreciates the community supplying it with their used books, CDs and video’s for the sales. Items may be dropped off at the library during regular library hours.

Rose club meets June 13

The Kitsap Rose Society meets Monday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Fire station #41 at 7600 Old Military Road NE in Bremerton. Guests are always invited to join us and participate in our love for roses. Refreshments are free and served after our speakers. The meeting begins with horticulture problems and questions on  insects of roses by Elena Williams followed by Patricia Grimes on Companion plants for roses. Eighth annual Kitsap Wine Festival Aug. 13

BREMERTON – The eighth annual Kitsap Wine Festival at Harborside Fountain Park returns with a celebration of food, wine and community Saturday, Aug. 13, from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy live music, bites from local restaurants and tastings from Washington wineries and breweries set against the breathtaking views of Puget Sound and the Port of Bremerton Marina.

Selections include Browne Family Vineyards, Davenport Cellars, Michael Florentino Cellars and more. While sipping wine or ale, guests will also enjoy food from participating restaurants and local purveyors.

Guests will receive a complimentary Kitsap Wine Festival commemorative wine glass and access to an onsite retail shop to purchase select wines.

Ticket proceeds benefit the Harrison Medical Center Foundation and its mission, to support Harrison Medical Center – and their community – by facilitating charitable gifts to support exceptional healthcare.

Tickets are $45 through July 31; $55, Aug. 1-12; $65 at the door, Aug. 13.

Parking is available in the parking lot adjacent to the ferry terminal. No car is needed for those arriving by ferry from downtown Seattle, as the event takes place immediately next to the ferry terminal along the marina.

Worker who went off Hood Canal Bridge identified

Bruce Hilton Cowing, 59, of Port Ludlow, was identified by the Washington State Patrol as the man who died after his pickup truck went off Hood Canal Bridge May 16.

Cowing’s red 1993 Toyota truck was westbound on the lower deck of the bridge, veered left and went off the lower maintenance deck and into the water. The incident was discovered May 17 at 6 a.m. The vehicle and victim were recovered by Global Diving and Salvage May 26.

Duarte graduates

MILWAUKEE, WI — Eduardo Duarte, of Silverdale, graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday, May 21 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.

Wisconsin Lutheran College is an independent, residential, Christian liberal arts college located on the border of Milwaukee and Wauwatosa.

Hoyson named Explorer of the Year

Jacynda Hoyson, 20, of Explorer Post #1514, was honored as the 2015 Washington Law Enforcement Explorer of the Year during a luncheon ceremony May 25 in conjunction with the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs spring training conference.

The award is sponsored by the Washington Law Enforcement Exploring Advisors (WLEEA), a sub-unit of the state sheriffs and police chiefs association.

Hoyson was nominated by her cadet post advisor who cited a multitude of leadership traits, organizational skills, a strong desire to participate and her extensive number of volunteer hours (750) performed during community events, charity fundraisers, sheriff’s patrol & tactical training and while assisting with routine agency administrative duties. Hoyson is the recipient of numerous letters of commendation and notes of appreciation for her volunteer service.

Hoyson joined the cadet explorer program in September 2013 and quickly assumed leadership assignments. In November 2014 she was advanced to cadet sergeant and undertook responsibilities as a squad leader. This past March, Hoyson was advanced to the rank of cadet captain and appointed as the post’s cadet commander.

She will graduate next month from Olympic College, Bremerton, with an Associate of Arts degree. She expects to attend Central Washington University, Ellensburg, beginning with the fall semester to complete her undergraduate degree requirements. She is a 2014 alumnus of Klahowya Secondary School in Central Kitsap. She is employed as a substitute paraeducator with Central Kitsap School District.

Jersey Mikes opens in Silverdale

SILVERDALE — Jersey Mike’s Subs opened in Silverdale on June 1.  Franchise owner Jeff Gates will hold a grand opening and free sub fundraiser through Sunday, June 5 to support Cougar Valley Elementary School, Emerald Heights Elementary School and Silverdale Elementary School.

The new restaurant, located at 11065 Pacific Crest Place NW (At the Trails at Silverdale), is circulating 15,000 coupons throughout the community offering a free regular sub for a minimum $2 contribution to Cougar Valley Elementary School, Emerald Heights Elementary School and Silverdale Elementary School.  Customers must have a coupon.

Beaman graduates from Park University

Parkville, Mo. — Angela M. Beaman, of Silverdale, graduated from Park University’s Naval Support Activity Mid-South Millington (Tenn.) Campus Center May 20. She has a degree in business administration/management.

Kitsap Photography Guild

The Kitsap Photography Guild will hold a meeting 7-9 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month at Cavalon Place Building, 2011 Myhre Road, Silverdale. The club hosts monthly presentations that are interesting and educational, no matter what your level of expertise, beginner to professional.
