Scott receives recognition for volunteer work
TACOMA — An Olalla resident was recognized for her volunteer work by her employer and a Pierce County agency.
Cindy Scott, 50, was named volunteer of the year by Umpqua Bank.
Scott, who works as a quality control risk manager at the Tacoma branch, was picked among 400 employees in Oregon and Washington.
Earlier last month, Scott received the Nancy Jander Memorial Award from CASA (court-appointed special advocate) of Piece County for her commitment and dedication.
The award is given to one CASA volunteer annually.
Umpqua pays employees up to 40 hours each year for volunteering in groups that focus on youth and education.
Local Masons honor SK educator, students
The Masonic Port Orchard Lodge 98 selected student and teacher nominees for their annual “Outstanding Educator of the Year” and student scholarship winners at an April 20 ceremony.
Lora Jean Piper of the Explorer Academy was honored as South Kitsap School District’s top educator. Educators were rated on academic credentials, awards and honors, membership in professional or community groups, and school activities.
Piper received $125 award, along with a $75 gift certificate from Amy’s on the Bay.
Ervin Anies and Alesca Delmundo were the top male and female students for the 2012-13 school year.
Students were nominated by school counselors and each submitted an in-depth presentation on their future goals and aspirations.
Help “Stuff the Bus” food drive on May 4
The South Kitsap School District’s bus drivers and transportation employees will host the fourth annual “Stuff the Bus” Food Drive on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Safeway Parking lot on Bethel Avenue.
All food and cash donations will be given to South Kitsap Help Line, a non-profit organization that has served South Kitsap children, adults and senior citizens in need since 1980.
They are dedicated to providing food and other assistance, as well as referrals to our community members who find themselves in crisis.

Schools receive achievement award
OLYMPIA — A total of 381 schools received awards — including three from the South Kitsap School District — received the Washington Achievement Award.
East Port Orchard Elementary School was recognized in Overall General Excellence and Science, while Burley-Glenwood was awarded for Overall General Excellence.
Sidney Glen Elementary School was awarded in Math.
State Superintendent Randy I. Dorn and State Board Chair Jeff Vincent recognized the schools during a April 30 awards ceremony in Covington.
The Washington Achievement Awards, based on Washington’s School Achievement Index, recognize elementary, middle/junior high, high and comprehensive schools.
Schools are awarded using performance from 2010 to 2012 on statewide assessments in reading, writing, math and science, as well as on graduation rates.
SKHS theater students host Improv Night
Looking to enjoy a night of laughs and unscripted comedy.
The South Kitsap High School’s Acting Ensemble will hold its last Improve Night of the school year entitled – “Prom-Prov” on Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m. The cost is $2 per person.
