Wine festival Aug. 13
BREMERTON — The eighth annual Kitsap Wine Festival at Harborside Fountain Park returns with a celebration of food, wine and community 2-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. Guests will enjoy live music, bites from local restaurants and tastings from Washington wineries set against the breathtaking views of Puget Sound and the Port of Bremerton Marina.
Selections include Browne Family Vineyards, Davenport Cellars, Michael Florentino Cellars and more. While sipping wine or ale, guests will also enjoy food from participating restaurants and local purveyors such as Amy’s Decadent Chocolates, Anthony’s at Sinclair Inlet, Bella Bella Cupcakes, Toro Lounge and others.
Guests will receive a complimentary Kitsap Wine Festival commemorative wine glass and access to the retail shop to purchase select wines.

Kitsap Business Forum presents ‘7 leadership styles that kill success’
SILVERDALE — Jan Harrison with JHarrison Solutions will speak about seven styles of leadership that get in the way of progress. She will also talk about six qualities of a better leader.

Hills Named to Emerson Dean’s List
BOSTON — Kelly Hills of Bremerton was named to Emerson College’s Dean’s List for the spring 2016 semester. Hills is majoring in media arts production. The requirement to make Emerson’s Dean’s List is a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.
Adamson graduates from Azusa
AZUSA, Calif. — Rachel Adamson of Bremerton graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a Bachelor of degree in Social Work on May 7 and joined approximately 2,000 graduates at the spring commencement ceremonies.
Students headed to Kure, Japan
Students selected to represent Bremerton as exchange students to Bremerton’s sister city, Kure, Japan are: Rosie Harper, 11th grade, Central Kitsap High School; Danielle Acedo, 12th grade, Olympic High School; and Mikos Piliaris, 12th grade, Central Kitsap High School.
The students will be in Kure for one month this summer. This is the 47th year Bremerton has exchanged students with Kure. The Bremerton Central Lions Club sponsors the program.
Three students from Kure will be in Bremerton for four weeks this summer. They will arrive on Monday, July 25, and depart on Sunday, Aug. 21. Anyone interested in being a host to a Japanese exchange student please call Elaine Valencia in the Bremerton Mayor’s office at 473-5266.
New Commanding Officer at Keyport
KEYPORT — On Friday, April 29, Capt. Doug LaCoste took command of Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division (NUWC), Keyport. He replaced Commander Dustin Demorest, who served as interim commanding officer since March and will continue serving as executive officer.
Capt. Francis Spencer became the commanding officer at NUWC Keyport in May 2015, and just a few months later was asked to take the helm of the newly formed Naval Surface Warfare Center Division, Philadelphia.
Spencer said that he was excited for the challenge of leading NSWCPD, but would miss the “friendliness, teamwork, sense of community, and strong dedication to the Navy and the Submarine Force” exhibited by the Keyport workforce.
LaCoste is a career submarine officer whose previous assignments included service on the joint staff, and management of all in-service aspects of the U.S. Navy undersea weapons program. As commanding officer, LaCoste is the senior military member of NUWC Keyport and is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s climate and operations.
NUWC Keyport has provided technical capabilities that support America’s dominance in the undersea domain for over 100 years. NUWC Keyport is headquartered in Washington State, and has facilities and operations in California, Guam, Hawaii, British Columbia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, and personnel working in several other states and countries.
Run to Tahoma VII Celebration of Life
PORT ORCHARD — Six unclaimed, deceased veterans will be remembered and honored in ceremony and song at The Unforgotten, Run to Tahoma VII Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 28, during Memorial Day Weekend at the Kitsap County Administration Building plaza, 619 Division Street, Port Orchard.
Participants in this year’s event includes the Duncan Creek String Quartet, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, Suquamish Tribe, Civil Air Patrol, United Service Organization (USO), and vocalists from the Northwest Navy Band and Washington Air National Guard. Following the ceremony, the departed veterans will be escorted to Tahoma National Cemetery near Kent. A video of last year’s Run to Tahoma and a tribute to veterans will be shown at 9:15 a.m. with the ceremony beginning at 9:45 a.m.

Replica Kitsap 9-11 Memorial Float designed by West Sound Tech students
Several classes of students combined their skills in building an exact replica of the Kitsap 9/11 Memorial. The replica is built on a trailer so that it will be able to be viewed at local parades and community events. The first viewing will be in the parking lot at 5 p.m. prior to the Bremerton School District School Board Meeting on May 19. The instructor, Dennis Bingham, and many of the students that were involved in the build, will also be at this meeting. The students will also march along-side the float at the Bremerton parade on May 21.

State Patrol seeks witnesses to hit-and-run
The Washington State Patrol is investigating a serious injury hit-and-run collision which occurred at 5:27 p.m. on May 11. This collision occurred SB Interstate 5 in the area of Interurban, approximately milepost 156.
A Nissan Murano slowed due to traffic and was struck by an Audi A6, causing it to spin across three lanes and come to rest in lane 5. A motorcycle traveling in lane 5 was unable to avoid the Murano and the subsequent collision caused the motorcycle rider to be ejected, causing serious injuries.
The driver of the causing vehicle fled the scene on foot and has yet to be apprehended.
Washington State Patrol detectives are seeking any witnesses that may have information pertaining to this collision. Please contact Detective Russ Haake at 425-401-7717.
The Miss West Sound Scholarship program accepting applications
SILVERDALE — The Miss West Sound Scholarship Program is accepting applications for its 2017 Miss West Sound and Miss West Sound’s Outstanding Teen competition.
Applicants for Outstanding Teen must be 13-17 years old on June 1, 2016. Applicants for the Miss competition must be 17-24 years old on June 1, 2016, and a high school graduate by July 1, 2016.
Contestants will be judged in talent, private interview, evening gown and on-stage question. Contestants will be judged in lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit and teen contestants will be judged in lifestyle and fitness in active wear.
The new Miss West Sound and Miss West Sound’s Outstanding Teen will be crowned the weekend of Oct. 1. They will both compete for their respective state titles in the summer of 2017 and will make appearances throughout Kitsap County during their year of service. Each participant will be awarded a scholarship for participating, with the opportunity to receive additional awards. The Miss West Sound Scholarship Program has provided close to $140,000 in scholarships since its inception in 2010 and has grown to be the third largest provider of scholarships among Miss Washington’s local programs.
