BREMERTON — Harrison Medical Center was recognized as a “Blue Distinction Center” by Premera Blue Cross for its knee and hip replacement surgeries.
Harrison was among five CHI Franciscan Health hospitals that were honored for spine, knee or hip care. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated health care facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies with input from the medical community.
“At CHI Franciscan our physicians, nurses and staff take great pride in providing excellent care and helping our patients get back to their active lifestyles as soon as possible,” said Greg Brown, MD, physician champion for orthopedic value based care at CHI Franciscan. “We are honored to be recognized as a premier health system delivering quality and affordable medical care.”
Hospitals designated as Blue Distinction Centers for spine surgery and knee and hip replacement demonstrate expertise in these surgeries, resulting in fewer patient complications and hospital readmissions. Designated hospitals must also maintain national accreditation.

Coast Guard issues $100,000 civil penalty for WSF laser strike
SEATTLE — The Captain of the Port, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, issued a $100,000 civil penalty Tuesday to a Washington resident who intentionally struck the Washington State Ferry Tokitae with a high-powered blue laser Oct. 22, 2015.
Coast Guard investigating officers determined that Mark Raden of Freeland, was aboard WSF Kitsap transiting between Mukilteo and Clinton when he pointed the laser at the pilot house of the Tokitae, resulting in injuries to the ferry master and chief mate.
Coast Guard officials are seeking civil penalties for violation of a safety and security zone as well as interference with the safe operation of the Tokitae while it transited between Mukilteo and Clinton. The final civil penalty amount will be determined by a Coast Guard Hearing Officer.
“Firing a laser at a vessel is extremely dangerous and directly interferes with the safe movement of commercial vessels and the Coast Guard’s ability to conduct search and rescue operations,” said Captain Joe Raymond, Captain of the Port, Sector Puget Sound. People who witness laser attacks are encouraged to call 911.
