FAMILY DAY AT UNDERSEA MUSEUM: The Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport will host family day from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 1. The topic is famous submersibles. Create a collage which will include the submersible Alvin then tour the gallery to find the model of the Alvin submersible, and take a look at the display in the lobby. Info: (360) 396-5547.

HOOKED ON FISHING: The Poulsbo Noon Lions Club and North Kitsap Future Farmers of America will host a Hooked on Fish Derby for children 11 and younger, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the horticulture pond behind Poulsbo Middle School. The event is free and bait is provided. Fishing poles are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so if children have poles, please bring them along. The pond will be stocked with about 500 rainbow trout. Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in each age category. Parents are encouraged to help, but not fish. This is a fun-filled family activity that can help children develop a lifelong passion for fishing. Complimentary fish cleaning will be provided by NKFFA.

THE STIGMA OF BIPOLAR DISORDER: National presenters Cinda and Linea Johnson, a mother and daughter with a commitment to building hope and lessening the stigma about mental health conditions, will share their story of treatment and recovery following Linea’s diagnosis of bipolar disorder. The talk will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, in the Keller House Education Center, located on the KMHS campus at 5441 Almira Drive NE, Bremerton. Seating for the evening event is limited. CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY SUPPORT GROUP: A new cardiothoracic surgery support group, sponsored by Harrison Medical Center, will meet quarterly. The next meeting is 3-5 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in Harrison Silverdale’s Orchid Room. Chris King, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon, will speak about what to expect after your heart surgery.

KITSAP AUDUBON SOCIETY: The Kitsap Audubon Society will meet from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, May 13, in the lower level of the Poulsbo Library, 700 NE Lincoln Road. Jaye Moore, of the Northwest Raptor Center, will bring live birds of prey — a swainson’s Hawk, Western screech owl and a Barred Owl. CELL PHONES NEEDED: The YWCA is asking community members to donate used cell phones for a cellular phone collection project. Cell phones will be recycled through the Shelter Alliance for funding which will support YWCA Programs: the ALIVE Shelter, ALIVE Legal Advocacy Program, ALIVE Bainbridge Island/North Kitsap Program, YWCA Family Outreach Program, Back-to-School Project, and YWCA Kids KAMP. SEEKING DOCENTS: The Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport is currently recruiting for the Youth Docent Volunteer Program. The program offers young people work experience in a museum. Volunteers work five hours a day three days a week during the busy summer months as well as a few hours monthly during the winter months. Work begins as soon as school is out in the spring. Teens must be between the ages of 13-17 to participate. Youth Docents serve as educational aides and curatorial assistants. They will research, design and build an exhibit. SEEKING VOLUNTEERS: The Nature Conservancy is looking for volunteer stewards to help monitor Foulweather Bluff preserve, a nature preserve in northern Kitsap County near Hansville. Our stewards visit the preserve during busy summer months and keep us informed of activities there. Shifts are two hours, twice per month.
