The Port Orchard council unanimously approved a two-year contact for Police Chief Geoffrey Marti which will end in April 2016.

Marti was appointed as the police chief last April when Alan Townsend accepted an offer to become Poulsbo’s police chief.

Marti’s annual salary will be $119,743.

The contract will be automatically renewed for a one-year term beginning April 24, 2016, with one exception: The city reserves the right, at least two months prior to contract’s expiration date, to not renew the contract.

Under the new contact, the city will provide a $50,000 life insurance benefit for the police chief and adjust his salary annually when a Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) is extended to employees. The city will pay a portion of his medial insurance.

The mayor will conduct an evaluation of Marti’s performance by Dec. 31 of each year of the contract.

The police chief is terminable at the will of the mayor, according to the contract.

The 55-year-old police veteran worked for 26 years as a police sergeant in Lincoln, Neb. — the same police department as Townsend. Townsend became police chief of Port Orchard in 1999, while Marti joined the department six years ago.

Marti said he has been in law enforcement for more than 30 years.
