PORT ORCHARD — Possible freezing weather conditions this week has prompted the Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management to activate the county’s Severe Weather Shelter Plan.
Four shelters — in Port Orchard, Silverdale, Poulsbo and Kingston — opened on Monday, Dec. 11. Operational hours will be from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m., except as noted for the Village Green location in Kingston.
Guests will not be permitted to check into the shelter after 9 p.m. If no guests have checked into a shelter location by 9 p.m., that location will close for the evening, department officials said.
The Bremerton Salvation Army location has taken over their shelter operations and will now open nightly regardless of weather conditions through the end of March.
The severe weather shelters serve all citizens in the region who require safe overnight refuge when hazardous weather conditions are expected, said department spokesman David Rasmussen.
The locations are as follows:
Port Orchard United Methodist Church, 725 Kitsap St., Port Orchard; Silverdale United Methodist Church, 9982 Silverdale Way, Silverdale; Gateway Fellowship, 18901 8th Ave. NE, Poulsbo; Village Green Community Center, 26159 Dulay Rd. NE, Kingston (open from 6 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.).
