A herd of cows who wandered onto Highway 3 near the Trigger Avenue exit caused a collision Wednesday evening that led to a 17-year-old boy being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

An 18-year-old Sequim man driving a red Volkswagen hit a cow shortly after 7 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 3, according to Washington State Patrol. The cow was tossed up and over the Volkswagen and then hit by a minivan driven by a 50-year-old Kingston woman. WSP reported that the minivan drove over the cow, killing the animal. Both vehicles stopped on the northbound ramp to Trigger Avenue.

The passenger in the Volkswagen, a 17-year-old Sequim boy, was airlifted to Harborview for facial fractures. The driver of the Volkswagen was uninjured.

The driver of the minivan had minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.

Northbound Highway 3 and the Trigger Avenue off-ramp were blocked for just under one hour. The remaining cows were returned to their pasture by their owner.
