South Kitsap resident, businessman and community activist Shawn Cucciardi announced on May 5 his candidacy for Port Orchard City Council.
He will be seeking the Position 1 seat held by Jeff Cartwright, who is not seeking another term.
“I know government does not always move swiftly, but I share the frustration of many residents of Port Orchard that our city seems to be stuck in a rut,” Cucciardi said. “I’ll advocate for a process that is more transparent and effective. That means getting public input and then acting on the priorities the public wants completed.”
Asked about his vision, Shawn said he would “move quickly to enhance public safety, improve our roads and parks, and work closely with local and state elected officials on issues affecting education and jobs. These are critical components to maintain Port Orchard as a desirable place to live and work.
“Our city will face major obstacles during the next four years. I want to use citizen input to help put our city on the right path. Port Orchard is where my wife and I chose to raise our family and they are a huge motivation for me to make our city safer and more prosperous for our generation and the next.”
Cucciardi is Chief Operating Officer of RMG Golf Course Management LLC where he oversees operations of three golf courses and restaurants, including McCormick Woods in Port Orchard. Cucciardi has formerly served as President of the Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Kitsap Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau, and was a board member of the South Kitsap Boys and Girls Club. Cucciardi is the President of the South Kitsap School Supporters.
In 2011, Cucciardi made an unsuccessful bid to succeed Bill Mahan, who did not run for re-election, for the Port of Bremerton Commission Position 3. Axel Strakeljahn, who was the manager of the Port Orchard Fred Meyer at that time, won that seat.
