POULSBO — Applications are being accepted for the 2014 Miss Poulsbo, Miss Kitsap and Miss Silverdale Scholarship Pageant, Jan. 11 in the Bremerton High School Auditorium.
The 2014 titleholders will each receive a $3,000 scholarship in addition to other awards and gifts. All participants in the pageant will receive a minimum of $300 just for competing, according to pageant director Michelle Wasson.
The Miss Poulsbo Scholarship Pageant is open to young women ages 16-22 who live in the North Kitsap School District. An applicant must be at least a junior and be a high school graduate by June 2015.
The Miss Kitsap Scholarship Pageant is open to young women ages 16-22 who live, work or attend school within the boundaries of the Bremerton and South Kitsap school districts. An applicant must be at least a junior and be a high school graduate by June 2015.
The Miss Silverdale Scholarship Pageant is open to young women ages 16-22, who live, work or attend school within the boundaries of the Central Kitsap School District. An applicant must be at least a junior and be a high school graduate by June 2015.
“Our current titleholders have been very busy this year representing the Kitsap County area,” Wasson said. “To date, they have made a combined 170 appearances at various fundraising events, parades and festivals. We are truly looking for young women who want to be a part of their community, enjoy meeting different types of people and like to try new things. They should be ready work as a team and make memories that will last a lifetime.”
Since their inception, the pageants have given away more than $372,000 in scholarships to 194 women in Kitsap County. In the past seven years, the Olympic College Foundation has given nearly $28,000 in scholarships to 23 contestants to continue their education at Olympic College. In each of the past five years, the International Air and Hospitality Academy has offered a $10,000 full-tuition scholarship to study hospitality management. Everest College in Bremerton is again offering a scholarship.
Contestants will be judged in six categories: Talent, 25 percent; private interview, 30 percent; evening gown, 20 percent; active wear, 15 percent; on-stage interview, 5 percent; and academic review, 5 percent.

The first Miss Poulsbo pageant was held in 1954; the winner was Laura Lee Smith. Of the ensuing Miss Poulsbos, one later became mayor (Donna Jean Bruce, nee Milton, 1955), and another became Miss Washington (Kristen Eddings, 2002).
