Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies used tear gas to get a 35-year-old Kingston man out of an attic so they could arrest him.

The suspect had two felony warrants, but after an unsuccessful attempt to avoid capture, he was taken into custody.

According to the deputies’ report, bail enforcement agents from Casey’s Bail Bonds in Port Orchard had seen the man enter a “chalet” on West Sherman Heights Road in Bremerton, and tried unsuccessfully to take him into custody.

When they forced entry into the residence, where the man had barricaded himself inside, the bail bondsmen saw what seemed to be an active check counterfeiting operation with printers, a laptop computer and counterfeit checks, all in the name of a 37-year-old Bremerton man.

Deputies arrived but initially couldn’t find the suspect, who may have tried to escape from one home to another through adjoining attic lofts, but got stuck in the process.

One of the bail agents began speaking with the man in the attic, and shortly thereafter a deputy saw a foot break through the ceiling, right above his head.

Deputies said the suspect, who said he was doing some work for a neighbor in the attic, spoke with at first with a Hispanic accent that morphed into a Russian accent.

At one point the man stuck his head out of the hole in the ceiling and looked directly at a deputy, while repeatedly asking who they were looking for.

One deputy told the suspect they were looking for him.

After the suspect crawled away from the hole and stopped speaking, the deputies sprayed him twice with pepper spray before he finally crawled out of the attic.

The deputies thought the suspect planned to intentionally slip off the ladder and fall, so they caught him before he could.

They handcuffed him without further incident and booked him in the Kitsap County Jail for two felony warrants, residential burglary, forgery and resisting arrest.

Bail was initially set at $250,000.
