Discover “E” Day: National Engineers Week

Hands-on science activities for children offered at Naval Undersea Museum Feb. 23

KEYPORT — Engineers design the cars we drive, capture energy from the sun and take us into space. On Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Naval Undersea Museum, 1 Garnett Way, Keyport, engineers will turn ideas into reality for children as part of National Engineers Week.

Engineers and Reservists from the local Navy bases, along with other volunteers, will conduct hands-on science and technology activities for children ages kindergarten to eighth grade. Children and parents can build electromagnets, geodesic domes, Cartesian divers, experiment with cantilever structures, and form a team in the Egg Olympics. The purpose of the events is to help students learn practical applications of science, technology, engineering, and math.

This is the 15th year the museum has participated in Discover “E” Day.

“Several hundred young people and their parents usually join us for this event,” said Museum Director Lindy Dosher. “The volunteer engineers are actively engaged with young people all day. They are enthusiastic teachers and role models for the scientists of the future.”
